"Estate planning" isn't one service - know which you actually need
Estate planning providers in Malaysia typically offer several distinct services that are easy to conflate: will writing (drafting the document itself), will custody (safekeeping the original so it can be located and produced when needed), trust services (for more complex arrangements, such as providing for minor children or protecting assets), and estate administration (handling the actual distribution of assets after death, which may involve applying for probate). A company might do all four or specialise in just one or two. Before comparing providers, be clear on which of these you actually need - a simple will for straightforward asset distribution is a very different engagement from setting up a trust.
Custody and safekeeping is where cheap will-writing services fall short
A will has no effect if it can't be found and produced when it's needed. Ask specifically how and where the original document is stored, what happens to that arrangement if the company changes ownership or ceases operating, and how your family or executor would actually locate and retrieve it. A low-cost will-writing service that doesn't address custody at all is solving only part of the problem - the drafting is often the easier half.
Understand the fee structure before you sign anything
Fees in this industry can be a one-time will-writing charge, an ongoing annual custody fee, a percentage-based fee for trust or estate administration services, or some combination. Get a full breakdown of what's charged once versus what recurs, and for how long a recurring fee applies (some custody arrangements are effectively for life). A provider that's cheaper upfront but charges meaningfully more in ongoing fees isn't necessarily the better value - compare total cost over a realistic time horizon, not just the initial quote.
Longevity and track record matter more here than almost any other category
A will or trust arrangement might not be activated for decades. That makes a provider's stability and track record a genuinely different kind of consideration than, say, a one-off renovation job - you're trusting the company (or its succession plan) to still exist and honour the arrangement whenever it's eventually needed. How long has the company operated in Malaysia, and does it have a clear answer for what happens to existing custody arrangements if it's acquired or restructured?
Check what's actually disclosed publicly
Because this category deals with sensitive personal and financial matters, look for providers that are clear and specific about their services, credentials and process on their own official channels, rather than vague reassurance. A provider's public information (service scope, how estate administration actually works, clear answers to common questions) is a reasonable proxy for how transparent they'll be once you're an actual client.
